śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | pūrvamuktam bhagavatā yajjñānaṃ padmajanmanā | sargādau lokaśāntyarthaṃ tadidaṃ kathayāmyaham || 1 ||

English

Vasishtha said: I am now telling you the same knowledge that the lord born from the lotus, Brahma, spoke earlier, at the start of creation, for the peace of the world.

śrīrāma uvāca | kathayiṣyasi vistīrṇā bhagavannmokṣasaṃhitām | imaṃ tāvatkṣaṇaṃ jātaṃ saṃśayaṃ me nivāraya || 2 ||

English

Rama said: Lord, you will tell me the vast compendium of liberation in full. But first remove this doubt that has just now arisen in me.

pitā śukasya sarvajño gururvyāso mahāmatiḥ | videhamukto na kathaṃ kathaṃ muktḥ suto'sya saḥ || 3 ||

English

Shuka's father, the all-knowing teacher Vyasa, is a man of great wisdom -- why then is he not freed from the body? And how is his son freed?

English

Vasishtha said: Within the light of that supreme sun, the three worlds are like specks of dust -- rising up and dissolving, again and again, too many to be counted.

vartamānāśca yāḥ santi trailokyagaṇakoṭayaḥ | śakyante tāśca saṃkhyātuṃ naiva kāścana kenacit || 5 ||

English

And even the countless three-worlds that exist right now -- no one at all can count them.

bhaviṣyanti parāmbhodhau jantasargataraṅgakāḥ | tāṃśca vai parisaṃkhyātuṃ sā kathaiva na vidyate || 6 ||

English

In the great ocean of existence, more waves of creation -- of living beings still to come -- will rise; and there is no way at all to count them either.

śrīrāma uvāca | yā bhūtā yā bhaviṣyantyo jagatsargaparamparāḥ | tāsāṃ vicāraṇā yuktā vartamānāstu kā iva || 7 ||

English

Rama said: It is right to reflect on the chains of world-creation that have already happened and that are yet to come. But what about the ones happening right now?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | tiryakpuruṣadevāderyo nāma sa vinaśyati | yasminneva pradeśe'sau tadaiveidaṃ prapaśyati || 8 ||

English

Vasishtha said: Whatever creature -- animal, man, or god -- dies, right there, in that very place, he at once sees a new world appear.

ātivāhikanāmnāntaḥ svahṛdyeva jagattrayam | vyomni cittaśarīreṇa vyomātmānubhavatyajaḥ || 9 ||

English

With the subtle body called the 'ativahika,' the unborn self experiences the three worlds right within his own heart; there, in that inner space, with a body made of mind, he experiences himself as that very space.

evaṃ mṛtā mriyante ca marṣyanti ca koṭayaḥ | bhūtānāṃ yāṃ jagantyāśāmuditāni pṛthakpṛthak || 10 ||

English

In this way, crores of beings have died, are dying, and will die -- and for each of them, separately, a whole world rises up out of their own desire.

saṅkalpanirmāṇamiva manorājyavilāsavat | indrajālāmāla iva kathārthapratibhāsavat || 11 ||

English

It is like something built by mere imagination, like the play of a daydream, like a web of magic tricks, like the picture that appears in the mind when a story is told.

durvātabhūkampa iva trastabālapīśācavat | muktālīvāmale vyomni nauspandataruyānavat || 12 ||

English

It is like a storm-wind and an earthquake, like a ghost that scares a child, like strings of pearls that a clouded eye sees in an empty sky, like trees on the shore that seem to move when seen from a rocking boat.

svapnasamvittiṣuravatsmṛtijātakhapuṣpavat | jagatsamsaraṇaṃ svāntarmṛto'nubhavati svayam || 13 ||

English

Like a city that appears in a dream, like a flower grown in the sky that only memory can produce -- in just this way, the dead person, all by himself, experiences within himself the whole passing show of the world.

tatrātipariṇāmena tadeva ghanatāṃ gatam | ihaloko'yamityeva jīvākāśe vijṛmbhate || 14 ||

English

There, through this experience ripening further and further, it grows solid and dense -- until, within the space of his own awareness, it unfolds as: 'this, right here, is the world.'

punastatraiva jagnedvāmarṇādyanubhūtimān | paraṃ lokaṃ kalpayati mṛtastatra tathā punaḥ || 15 ||

English

Again, right there, after going through things like birth and death, he imagines another world; and there too, having died once more, it happens the same way again.

tadantaranye puruṣāstevāmantastathaitare | saṃsāra iti bhāntīme kadalīdalapīṭhavat || 16 ||

English

Inside that world there are other people, and inside them, in just the same way, still others -- all of this appearing as 'the world,' like the layer upon layer of a banana-tree's stem.

na pṛmbhyādimahābhūtagaṇā na ca jagatkramāḥ | mṛtānāṃ santi tatrāpi tathāpyeṣāṃ jagadbhamāḥ || 17 ||

English

For the dead, even there, none of the great elements -- earth and the rest -- nor the orderly working of a world truly exist; and yet a semblance of a world still appears to them.

avidyaiva hyananteyaṃ nānāprasaraśālinī | jaḍānāṃ saridādīrghā taratsargataraṅgiṇī || 18 ||

English

This ignorance alone is truly endless, branching out in countless directions; for those who are dull in understanding, it is a long river, its waves made of endless creation, that one must cross.

paramārthāmbudhau sphāre rāma sargataraṅgakāḥ | bhūyobhūyo'nuvartante ta evānye ca bhūriśaḥ || 19 ||

English

O Rama, in the vast ocean of ultimate reality, waves of creation continue to arise again and again -- the same ones, and many others too.

sarvataḥ sadṛśāḥ kecitkulakramamano guṇeḥ | kecidardhena sadṛśāḥ keciccātivilakṣaṇāḥ || 20 ||

English

Some are similar in every way -- in family lineage, order, mind, and qualities; some are similar by half; and some are entirely different.

imaṃ vyāsaṅga tatra dvātriṃśaṃ saṃsmarāmyaham | yathāsaṃbhavavijñānadṛśā saṃlaśyamānayā || 21 ||

English

I recall this -- the thirty-second such cycle in that context, as far as it can be known, seen with the eye of insight.

dvādaśālpadhiyastatra kulākārehitaiḥ samāḥ | daśa sarve samākārāḥ śiṣṭāḥ kulavilakṣaṇāḥ || 22 ||

English

Of these, twelve are of limited intelligence, alike to their family in form and conduct; ten are all alike in form; and the rest are different from their family.

adyapayanye bhaviṣyanti vyāsavālmīkayastathā | bhṛgvaṅgiraḥpulastyāśca tathaivāpyanyathaiva ca || 23 ||

English

Even now, and hereafter, there will be still more Vyasas and Valmikis, more sages like Bhrigu, Angiras, and Pulastya -- some just the same, and some quite different.

narāḥ surarṣidevānāṃ gaṇāḥ saṃbhūya bhūriśaḥ | utpadyante vilīyante kadācicca pṛthakpṛthak || 24 ||

English

Crowds of men, of sage-gods, and of gods themselves gather in great numbers and arise, then dissolve -- and sometimes each of them, alone, on its own.

brāhmī dvāsaptatiḥ traitā āsīdasti bhaviṣyati | sa evānyaśca lokāśca tvaṃ cāhaṃ ceti vedayaham || 25 ||

English

This cycle of seventy-two ages measured by Brahma has been, is, and will be, again and again -- the very same one, and other worlds, and you, and I too -- this is what I know.

krameṇāsya muneritthaṃ vyāsasyādbhutakarmaṇaḥ | saṃlakṣyate'vatāro'yaṃ daśamo dīrghadarśinaḥ || 26 ||

English

In this way, one by one, this present appearance of the sage Vyasa -- a man of wondrous deeds and far-seeing vision -- is recognized as his tenth incarnation.

abhūma vyāsavālmīkiyuktā vayamanekaśaḥ | abhūma vayameveme bahuśaśca pṛthakpṛthak || 27 ||

English

Many times we ourselves have been Vyasa and Valmiki both; many times, too, we have been these very people separately, each on his own.

abhūm vayameveme sadṛśā itare vidaḥ | abhūm vayameveme nānākārā samāśayā' || 28 ||

English

We ourselves have been these very people, and also other knowing ones like them; we ourselves have been these people too, in many different forms, but always with the same nature within.

bhāvyamadyāpyaneneha nanu vārāṣṭakaṃ punaḥ | bhūyo'pi bhārataṃ nāma setihāsaṃ kariṣyati || 29 ||

English

And even now, this same Vyasa is destined to appear eight more times, and each time he will again compose the epic called the Bharata, together with its history.

kṛtvā vedavibhāgaṃ ca nītvānena kulaprathām | brahmatvaṃ ca tathā kṛtvā bhāvyaṃ vaidehamokṣaṇam || 30 ||

English

After dividing the Vedas, after carrying on the family's tradition through this work, and after likewise attaining the rank of Brahma -- he is destined, in the end, to gain liberation free of the body.

vītaśokabhayaḥ śāntanirvāṇo gatakalpanaḥ | jīvanmukto jitamanā vyāso'yamiti varṇitaḥ || 31 ||

English

Free from grief and fear, at perfect peace, all mental constructs gone, mind fully mastered -- this Vyasa is described as one who is liberated while still alive.

vittaktadhuvayaḥkarmavidyāvijñānaceṣṭitaiḥ | samāni santi bhūtāni kadācinnatu tāni tu || 32 ||

English

In wealth, [a word unclear here in the source], age, deeds, learning, and understanding, beings are sometimes alike with each other -- but even then, they are not, for that, the very same beings.

kvacitsargaśataistāni bhavanti na bhavanti vā | kadācidapi māyeyamitthamantavivarjitā || 33 ||

English

Sometimes, after hundreds of creations have passed, the same beings appear again, and sometimes they do not; this is how this illusion goes on, without any end.

yacchatīyaṃ viparyāsaṃ bhūribhūtaparamparā | bījarāśirivājasraṃ pūryamāṇaḥ punaḥpunaḥ || 34 ||

English

This vast chain of beings keeps producing change, over and over, like a great heap of seeds that is filled up again and again, without a break.

tenaiva saṃniveśena tathānyena punaḥpunaḥ | sargākārāḥ pravartante taraṅgāḥ kālavāridheḥ || 35 ||

English

In the same pattern, and in different ones too, again and again, the shapes of creation keep appearing -- they are the waves of the ocean of time.

āśvastāntaḥkaraṇaḥ śāntavikalpaḥ svarūpasāramayaḥ | paramaśamāmṛtatr̥ptastiṣṭhati vidvānnirāvaraṇaḥ || 36 ||

English

The one who knows this rests with a mind now at ease, all restless thoughts stilled, made whole in his own true nature, content with the nectar of supreme peace -- he remains free of every veil of ignorance.
