The sacrifice of that wise sage, a righteous act, was being destroyed by demons who were drunk with their magical power, their strength and their might.
deva dvāri mahātejā bālabhāskarabhāsuraḥ | jvālāruṇajaṭājūṭaḥ pumāñchrīmānavasthitaḥ || 11 ||
"My lord, at the gate stands a man of great brilliance, shining like the morning sun. His matted hair is red like fire. He is glorious and full of splendor."
For some reason, it seemed as if the sun itself had come down to the surface of the earth, filled with the power of a brahmin and the great strength of a kshatriya.
His shoulders were covered by a mass of matted hair, always rough and worn from long austerity and old age. He looked like a mountain wrapped in the red clouds of evening.
His body was fitted with the sacred thread, and he held a white, raised sacrificial ladle. He seemed to pour endless wonder into the heart of anyone who looked at him.
Seeing that excellent sage, the king bowed low even from a distance. He bent down so far that the gem on his slipping crown touched and honored the ground.
Seeing that greatest of sages shining with splendor, the king was filled with awe, yet his face was joyful, and he himself offered him the ceremonial water of welcome.
He accepted the water-offering from the king, following the rite laid down in the scriptures. Then, as the king walked around him in reverence, he honored the king in return.
Your coming is like a childless man at last having a son through union with his beloved wife, and like actually gaining the wealth one had only seen in a dream.
Just as one feels joy at flying through the sky, or joy when someone dead returns again, so do I feel joy at your coming, brahmin. Welcome to you, great sage.
kaśca te paramaḥ kāmaḥ kiṃ ca te karavāṇyaham | pātrabhūto'si me vipra prāptaḥ paramadhārmikaḥ || 44 ||
What is your greatest wish, and what can I do for you? Brahmin, you are exactly the right person for me to give to, you who have come here, most righteous of all.
Long ago you were known by the title of a royal sage, and austerity made your glory shine bright. Now you have reached the state of a brahmin sage. O lord, you deserve my worship.
Your desire, fear and anger are gone; you are free from attachment and free from illness. O brahmin, it is a great wonder that you have come to me.
O best of those who know what the Vedas teach, I feel that I myself have arrived at a sacred place, free from every sin, like the moon's disc risen bright.
O good man, because of the merit of your coming, my heart is filled with joy. Today my birth has become fruitful, and my life has become a truly good life.
Seeing you arrived here, I have honored you and bowed to you; and within, in my own self, I bow again, as the ocean swells within itself on seeing the moon.
Whatever task, or for whatever purpose, you have come here, O best of sages, know that it is already done. Know that you are always to be honored by me.
Hearing these very sweet words -- pleasant to the ear, spoken with humility by one who knew the self, marked by his well-known virtue and fame -- the great sage felt the highest joy.
