One who is always inward-focused and blissful, endowed with self-contentment, performs peaceful and generous acts; there, O sinless one, you are the doer.
One who is liberated from the bonds of desires and thoughts, and who abides in the self, enjoying self-awareness, is the self-contented and great lord.
The fragrance of the blossoms of the tree of the world's objects fills the pure consciousness, which is the eternal, unchanging, and inward-facing awareness.
asaṃkalpakalaṅkāyāṃ jñānāccittakṣayodaye | śuddhāyāṃ saṃvidi sthitvā kuru mā kuru vānagha || 22 ||
When the mind is purified by the knowledge that arises from the absence of desires, remain established in pure consciousness, whether you act or not, O sinless one.
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | na me vaktum aśaktatvād yuktikṣaya upasthitaḥ | kiṃtu praśnasya koṭyāsya tūṣṇīm evānaghottaram || 31 ||
Shri Vasishtha said: It is not due to my inability to speak that the reasoning has diminished. Rather, the ultimate answer to this question is silence itself.
dvividho bhavati praṣṭā tattvajño'jño'thavāpi ca | ajñasyājñatayā deyo jñasya tu jñatayottaraḥ || 32 ||
The questioner is of two kinds: one who knows the truth and one who does not. To the ignorant, the answer should be given according to their ignorance. To the knowledgeable, the answer should be given according to their knowledge.
From non-deliberation, with resolve, silence is said to be the supreme state. That very silence is given to you, O knower, O beautiful one, as the response.
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca| evaṃ sthite rāghava he yathābhūtamidaṃ śṛṇu| kastvaṃ ko'haṃ jagadvā kimiti tattvavidāṃ vara || 43 ||
Sri Vasistha said: O Raghava, listen to this as it is, in this situation. Who are you, who am I, and what is the world? O best among the knowers of truth.
śuddhajñānaikarūpātmā śuddhajñānamayātmani | anyasaṃviddṛśonmuktaḥ svānyadvaktuṃ na vedmyaham || 46 ||
The self, which is of the nature of pure knowledge, is liberated from the perception of others in the self of pure knowledge. I do not know how to express the difference between the self and others.
Those who are engaged in the cultivation of their own side and the enhancement of the ego-self, even for the sake of liberation, lead to a hundred branches.
muktatāyā ahaṃteyamabhāvo bhāvanaṃ kva ca | tayaivānvīṣyate seti jātyandhaścitramīkṣate || 50 ||
The absence of the sense of 'I' is the state of liberation. Where is the need for contemplation? By that very absence, one is sought. The one born blind sees the wonder.
cetanasya'cetanatvamacetyonmukhatātmakam mokṣaṃ viddhi paraṃ śāntaṃ padamavyayameva ca || 55 ||
The non-conscious state of the conscious being, which is devoid of the tendency to turn outward, is the supreme, peaceful, and eternal state of liberation.
In the state where there is no limitation by direction, time, and other factors, and the self is calm and peaceful, the concept of 'I' does not arise. Who thinks what and how?
Just as a dream is perceived within oneself without the sense of pure consciousness, similarly, the resolution of the mind is perceived outside oneself.
The mind, intellect, and other faculties are in accordance with pure consciousness. However, the meanings of the words 'mind,' 'intellect,' etc., are inert.
saṃvinmātrasya śuddhasya śūnyasya ca kimantaram | yaccāntaraṃ tadvibudhā vidantyeti na vāggatim || 60 ||
What is the difference between pure consciousness and emptiness? That which is the difference, the wise know, and it does not come within the realm of speech.
Just as the appearance of existence and non-existence is perceived in some way, similarly, this world is perceived in Brahman through the effort of ignorance.
Thus, being certain within, although known as ignorant, the one who is the form of consciousness, even while existing, becomes calm like the non-existent.
The ignorance of the non-inert ones is said to be calmed like that of immovable objects. That is called the undisturbed liberation, the eternal and imperishable state.
The delusion 'I am Brahman, and this is the world' is born of ignorance. This false perception, like darkness, cannot be dispelled by mere observation, just as a lamp cannot dispel darkness.
samagrakaraṇagrāmo'pyasaṃkalpo vivedanaḥ | na kiṃcidapyanubhavatyantarbāhye ca śāntadhīḥ || 68 ||
Even with all the senses intact, one who is free from desires and has discriminative knowledge does not experience anything, either internally or externally, with a peaceful mind.
Just as a dream dissolves into deep sleep, in the state of samadhi, all perceptions dissolve into the knowledge of the self, and then only the self is perceived.
Just as the blueness of the sky is an illusion, so too are the elements like earth in Shiva. Apart from mere delusion, there is nothing else, just as the sky is nothing but space.
All is void, without support, and even this sense of mine-ness is unreal, like a city seen in a dream with two moons. For us, even that does not exist.
In the state of peace and consciousness, in the various individual selves, there is Shiva. In the context of the parts and the whole, there is a logical connection here, not elsewhere.
na ca nāstikopalambhāt saṃvitterastitā ca naiva aje | grāhyagrāhakadṛṣṭer asaṃbhāvād asti kiṃcidapi || 78 ||
There is no existence of consciousness due to the non-perception of the non-existent. Due to the impossibility of the perception of the perceiver and the perceived, there is nothing at all.
That which is peaceful, pure, noble, revered by the noble, auspicious, unborn, imperishable, and equal, that is the true word. Be peaceful, drink, enjoy, for this is not.
