Sri Vasishtha said: Listen to this story about Akashaja, an ornament for the ear. It is the chapter on how he came to be, by which, Raghava, you will understand.
asti hyākāśajo nāma dvijaḥ paramadhārmikaḥ | dhyānaikanisthaḥ satatam prajānāṃ ca hite rataḥ || 2 ||
There was a brahmin named Akashaja, who was extremely righteous. He was always absorbed only in meditation, and always cared for the welfare of people.
Even though the brahmin was right there in front of him to see, Death, powerful as he was, could not hold him even with a hundred hands, as if trying to grab a man made only of thought.
Yama said: O Death, you alone have no power to kill anyone by force. It is the deeds of the one who is to die that actually cause the death, nothing else does.
Death tried hard, but he found the deeds of Akashaja the way a wise man finds the son of a barren woman, or another man finds a mountain made only of his own wish.
saṃbandhaḥ prāktanenāsya na manāgapi karmaṇāasti vandhyāsutasyeva tathā'jātākṛteriva || 20 ||
He has no connection at all, not even a little, with any past deed, just like the son of a barren woman, or like the shape of something that was never born.
The movement of the breath is what looks like his action to people like us. It is only we who see it that way - he himself has no thought at all of doing anything here.
He remains fixed there, being pure consciousness itself, as if he is imagining, out of his own supreme state, a shape that seems different from himself - like a carved wooden doll standing on a pillar of consciousness.
In just the same way this Brahmin stands as one who has become the very self of ultimate reality - the way liquidness is in water, and the way emptiness is in the sky.
na pūrvāṇyeṣa teneiha na saṃsāravashaṃ gataḥ | sahakārikāraṇānāmabhāve yaḥ prajāyate || 29 ||
Nor does he have any past actions stored up; that is why he has not fallen under the sway of this cycle of birth and death here - since he is one who is born without any helping cause behind him.
kartā na pūrvaṃ nāpyadya kathamākramyate vada | yadaiṣa kalpanāṃ buddhyā mṛtināmnīṃ kariṣyati || 31 ||
He was never a doer before, and he is not one now either - so tell me, how can he be seized? Even if, with his mind, he forms a mere idea called death.
But because this Brahmin has no notion at all of earth and the other elements, he has no form. It is simply impossible to seize him - just as it is impossible to hold the sky with a strong rope.
mṛtyuruvāca | bhagavañjāyate śūnyātkathaṃ nāma vadeti me | pṛthvyādayaḥ kathaṃ santi na santi vada vā katham || 34 ||
Death said: Lord, tell me - how can something be born from emptiness? And tell me how the elements, earth and the rest, exist, or how they do not exist.
yama uvāca | na kadācana jāto'sau na ca nāsti kadācana | dvijaḥ kevalavijñānabhāmātraṃ tattathā sthitaḥ || 35 ||
Yama said: He was never born at any time, and he never fails to exist at any time either. This Brahmin is nothing but the pure light of awareness alone - that is exactly how he stands.
That emptiness is ever shining, subtle, without any mark, fixed as the supreme. Then, following this, close to him, a great light like a mountain arises.
saṃvinmātrasvabhāvatvāddeho'hamiti cetati | kākatālīyavadbhrāntamākāraṃ tena paśyati || 38 ||
Because his very nature is pure awareness alone, the thought 'I am the body' arises in him, like the chance coincidence of a crow landing and a palm fruit falling at the same moment - and through that thought he sees a mistaken shape.
sa eṣa brāhmaṇastasminsargādāvambarodare | nirvikalpaścidākāśarūpamāsthāya saṃsthitaḥ || 39 ||
This same Brahmin, at the very start of creation, inside the belly of the sky, remains established, free of all thought-constructs, having taken on the form of the space of consciousness.
nāsya deho na karmāṇi na kartṛtvaṃ na vāsanā | eṣa śuddhacidākāśo vijñānaghana ātataḥ || 40 ||
He has no body, no actions, no sense of being the doer, no leftover impressions. He is pure space made of consciousness, a solid mass of awareness spread everywhere.
Not the slightest trace of any past impressions belongs to him at all. He is simply like a radiance whose very form is empty space and whose very form is light.
vedanāmātrasaṃśāntāvīdṛśo'pi na dṛśyate | tasmādyathā cidākāśastathā tatpratipattayaḥ || 42 ||
When even mere sensation has fully quieted down, even a being like this is no longer seen as anything separate. So, whatever one understands about the space of consciousness, that understanding itself is of that same nature.
śrīrāma uvāca | brahmaiṣa kathito devastvayā me prapitāmahaḥ | svayaṃbhūraj ekātmā vijñānātmeti me matiḥ || 45 ||
Shri Rama said: You have told me that this god is Brahma, my great-grandfather - self-born, unborn, the one single self, whose very nature is pure awareness. That is what I understand.
In one manvantara, when Death, who devours everyone, was carrying off creatures and gaining in strength, he grew bold against the lotus-born one, Brahma, and started this dispute on his own.
brahmā kila parākāśavapurākramyate katham | manomātraṃ ca saṃkalpaḥ pṛthvyādirahitākṛtiḥ || 49 ||
Brahma's body is said to be the highest space itself — so how can anyone reach it or take hold of it? And imagination is only the mind; the shape it takes has no earth, water, or any of the other elements in it.
yaścidvyomacamatkāraḥ kilākārānubhūtimān | sa cidvyomaiva no tasya kāraṇatvaṃ na kāryatā || 50 ||
That wonder-form which seems to rise up in the space of consciousness, and which seems to have a shape one can experience — it is nothing but that same space of consciousness. It is not the cause of that space, and it is not its effect either.
Just as an imagined person shines out in space with a shape, yet has no earth or any other element in him, so does the Self-existent one shine out in the same way.
As, in the clear sky of Muktali's imagination and dream, a city appears with no earth or any other element in it, so does the Self-existent one shine out in the same way.
na dṛśyamasti na draṣṭā paramātmani kevale | svayaṃcittā tathāpyeṣa svayaṃbhūriti bhāsate || 53 ||
In the one Supreme Self there is nothing seen and no one who sees. Yet, because it is consciousness itself, this Self appears and is called 'the Self-existent'.
This mind, which is called Brahma, is nothing but imagination itself. Like a person imagined in empty space, it has no earth or any other element in it.
As a lifeless doll-figure appears in the mind of a painter, before he paints it, so Brahma appears out of the space of consciousness as this world of moving beings.
That Self-existent one — who is nothing but the space of consciousness, endless, without beginning or middle — appears as 'Brahma' only because of his own mind's working. He seems to have a shape, he seems to be a person, but in truth he has no body at all, just as a barren woman's son has no body.
